ASM Journals Migration FAQs

Migration to Atypon scheduled for May 25th

General Overview

How will my library and my users be affected?
ASM is making every effort to provide a seamless and transparent migration. The users’ ability to engage with the content should not be affected.

When is the move going to happen?
The move is scheduled for May 25th.

Will there be a soft launch?
Yes! Our soft launch is scheduled for May 17th. Those currently listed as the administrator for their instituion will receive an activation email on that day. We ask that you activate your account and encourage you to look around the site. If you run into any problems, please email ejournals@asmusa.org.

What is the URL of the new platform?
The URL will be https://journals.asm.org. The individual titles will use the following links:

  • Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy: https://journals.asm.org/journal/aac
  • Applied and Environmental Microbiology: https://journals.asm.org/journal/aem
  • Clinical and Vaccine Immunology: https://journals.asm.org/journal/cvi
  • Clinical Microbiology Reviews: https://journals.asm.org/journal/cmr
  • EcoSal Plus: https://journals.asm.org/journal/ecosalplus
  • Eukaryotic Cell: https://journals.asm.org/journal/ec
  • Infection and Immunity: https://journals.asm.org/journal/iai
  • Journal of Bacteriology:https://journals.asm.org/journal/jb
  • Journal of Clinical Microbiology: https://journals.asm.org/journal/jcm
  • Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education: https://journals.asm.org/journal/jmbe
  • Journal of Virology: https://journals.asm.org/journal/jvi
  • mBio: https://journals.asm.org/journal/mbio
  • Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews: https://journals.asm.org/journal/mmbr
  • Microbiology Resource Announcements: https://journals.asm.org/journal/mra
  • Microbiology Spectrum: https://journals.asm.org/journal/spectrum
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology: https://journals.asm.org/journal/mcb
  • mSphere: https://journals.asm.org/journal/msphere
  • mSystems: https://journals.asm.org/journal/msystems

How will URLs be affected? Is there anything I need to do to ensure continuity?
All URLs will be redirected. However, to ensure continuity and the best possible user experience, libraries are encouraged to make updates to URLs used in library catalogues, discovery tools, and hyperlinks. We are working with our discovery partners to ensure that they are also updating their links, but libraries are responsible for some links, including their own locally held knowledge bases. Redirects may not work with these services, and so we urge you to update them. Linking syntax and KBART files will be available at launch from https://www.atypon.com/kbart-files/. Please see this guide for the URL structure for each journal that will appear in the KBART file.

Will there be any changes to browser support and off-campus access?
No. Atypon does not have a list of supported browsers. Atypon supports all major browsers until the browser’s company drops support. For example, in August 2021 when Microsoft officially drops support for IE11, so will Atypon.

For off-campus access, Atypon supports federated access via Shibboleth and OpenAthens, as well as device pairing and Campus Activated Subscriber Access (CASA).

Who can I contact if I have a question about the impact to my library?
Please send an email to ejournals@asmusa.org.

Migration

Will there be any interruption of service?
No, there should not be any interruption to the service. However, we recommend that libraries check that access and links are working and report any problems to us at ejournals@asmusa.org as soon as possible.

How does the move to a new domain impact linking from reading lists, bookmarked links, OPACs, etc?
ASM is making every effort to move the site over in a way that does not disrupt service or impact our customers. Please let us know by emailing ejournals@asmusa.org if you find a broken link.

When is the earliest we can switch the links to the new URL structure? Will there be a period of dual running or do we have to switch on one day to ensure continuity?
There will not be dual running. Changes have to be made the day we make the switch to the new platform.

Will there be any changes to DOIs? Will the DOIs be updated to reflect the new domain?
No. No changes will be made to the DOIs that ASM has published, but the DOI records will be updated to reflect the new location where the content will be accessible.

Which 3rd parties have you communicated with to inform them of the domain move?
We have been in touch with many organizations, such as PubMed, Clarivate (Web of Science), Scopus, ProQuest, EBSCO, and others. We are also working with OCLC to ensure EZproxy changes are made as needed. We will provide further updates as it progresses. If there are specific services you have questions about, please email us at ejournals@asmusa.org.

How will knowledge bases and discoverability services be affected? Do I need to do anything about this?
Knowledge bases should be updated by the service owners. However, please check around the time of migration and talk to your discovery service account manager if you do not see the updated links. If you hold your Knowledge base locally you may need to make these changes yourself. Please report broken links to us as soon as you find them, making a note of the discovery service you have used.

When will the MARC records and KBART files be updated? Where can I find them on the new domain?
MARC records will be found at launch here: https://journals.asm.org/action/institutionAdmin?page=sfxreport. KBART files will be found at launch here: https://www.atypon.com/kbart-files/. Please use this guide for a step-by-step guide on how to request a KBART file.

Will I need to update my RSS Feed?
Yes you will. We have outlined the RSS feed structure in this document; let us know if you have questions.

Will there be any impact on usage reports?
Atypon is COUNTER-compliant, and so usage will be available going forward. For historical usage we encourage users to download any usage data they require.

I am an account administrator for an institution. What things can I manage via the Account Administrator area?
You will be able to pull usage reports, manage administrators, update IP addresses, configure link resolvers, manage your institutional logo and banner, request KBART files, and more! This screenshot lists the options that will be available to you.

Access and Authentication

What about WAYFless URIs?
You will be able to create WAYFless URIs! The instructions are as follows:

  1. Copy the link location for the organization listed on the {host}/action/ssostart page. For example: https://www.example/action/ssostart?idp=https%3A%2F%2Fidp.protectnetwork.org%2Fprotectnetwork-idp.
  2. Add a redirectUri parameter with the URI of the publication to which the user should be redirected after authenticating. For example, the URI for a journal home page might be as follows: redirectUri=%2Fjournal%2Flvh.
  3. The resulting link is a WAYFless URI. In this example: https://www.example/action/ssostart?idp=https%3A%2F%2Fidp.protectnetwork.org%2Fprotectnetwork-idp&redirectUri=%2Fjournal%2Flvh.

What about my proxy settings?
Institutional administrators will be able to set up proxy settings under the administrator dashboard. Please see this PDF document for instructions.

Will I need to make any changes to the Shibboleth/OpenAthens set up?
While you will need to set up your Shibboleth and OpenAthens access (please feel free to email ejournals@asmusa.org for assistance), Literatum does support Shibboleth name/value pairs for SAML2 protocols.

Please review this list of Shibboleth Federations that ASM will support at launch. Send ejournals@asmusa.org an email if your federation is not listed, so that we can pursue enabling it.

End Users

Will users need to create a new account?
Yes, everyone will need to create a new account.

Will email alerts and saved searches be migrated?
We are going to attempt to migrate alerts; however, searches and passwords will not be retained.
