Member Subscription FAQs

Members

Why should I subscribe to an online ASM journal if my institution subscribes, since I can access the online journals from work?

Certain features of the online journals are available only to member subscribers:

  • Access to all the online journals from any computer anywhere in the world.
  • The Members-only pricing options: $375 for all online journals, $290 for the Clinical Package, or $295 for the Basic Package for discount online journal packages for 2019.

Will I receive a password?
Shortly after purchasing your subscription to an ASM online journal, you will receive an email with activation instructions. You will be able to create your own username and password during the activation process. Please allow 24-72 hours to receive this information via email. If you have not received the email after 72 hours, please click here to activate your subscription. You will need your NEW ASM Membership ID in order to complete the process.

When you complete the subscription activation process, you will create an online journal subscription username and a password for yourself. (These are different from your ASM membership username and password.)

May I share my password?
You are the only one licensed to use this password; sharing of passwords is not allowed.

What if I forget my password?
Click here for instructions on how to regain access to your subscription.

What content is available online?
Member subscribers have access to the full content of every article from the accepted manuscript to the final published version, including supplemental material, for any journal to which they have a subscription. Links to PubMed citations and ORCID author profiles are present as well.

All subscriptions include access to ASM open access journals mBio, Microbiology Resource Announcements, mSphere, mSystems, and Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education.

If I stop subscribing to the online version, will I still retain access to the full text for the year(s) in which I subscribed?
Access to the current full-text collection is permitted for current subscribers only. However, free access is granted to full-text content that is more than six months old for the primary-research journals and one year old for the review journals.

How can I tell whether my institution has subscribed?
You will see an indication at the top of an article abstract or full-text page confirming that your institution has a subscription [e.g., "Institution: (your institution's name)"].

If your institution has a subscription, you will automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full-text searching, full-text display in HTML and PDF, and Medline and GenBank links. If you cannot gain access from your campus or company and you think that your institution has a subscription, contact your librarian.

How do I get my institution to subscribe?
If your institution has not subscribed and you would like to have an institutional subscription, please ask your librarian to contact us at turpinpf@turpin-distribution.com.

How long will the volumes of ASM Journals Online remain available on the Internet?
In response to our subscribers’ concerns about archiving online content, ASM plans to leave online all volumes available on the Internet for the foreseeable future.

Why can’t I download an article?
Only paid subscribers can download recently published content. If neither you nor your institution subscribes, and the article was published in a primary research journal within the previous six months or in a review journal within the last 12 months, you will be denied access.

When you try to access a current article without a subscription you will be given the choice of accessing the article with a user name and password or using the Pay-Per-View option.

The Pay-Per-View option allows you to purchase 1-day access to the article for US$25.00. You may view, download, and/or print the article for your personal scholarly, research, and educational use.

Who is eligible for a member subscription?
All current ASM members, except those at the Supporting level, are eligible for a member subscription to ASM Journals Online. (Note: individuals are eligible for membership, institutions are not.) Please review our Benefits for Members page for additional details on the advantages of having a member journal subscription.

If you have a question about ASM membership, please contact ASM Membership Services at service@asmusa.org; for more information about joining ASM, please visit ASM Membership.

What do I do if I forget my member subscriber number?
Your online member subscriber number appears on the upper left section of the subscription activation email that you received when ordering the online subscription. If you no longer have that information, you may obtain it by logging into your profile at http://myasm.asm.org/eweb. Your ID is located beneath your name on your full profile page.
