Publons and the American Society for Microbiology announce pilot partnership

Washington D.C. (1 June 2015) - Publons, the world's largest peer review platform, and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the oldest and largest life science membership organization, have entered into a pilot partnership, which will allow verified peer review recognition to peer reviewers of 12 participating ASM journals via the Publons platform. As of 1 June 2015, ASM and Publons are working together as part of a pilot program to improve the peer review process of journals published by ASM.

Publons works with peer reviewers, academic publishers, and research institutions to make peer review a rewarding activity. Established in 2013, the company collects information from peer reviewers and publishers to produce comprehensive reviewer profiles with publisher-verified peer review contributions that researchers can add to their resume without breaking reviewer anonymity.

“It is exciting to work with a prestigious organization in ASM, 114 years our senior, to better acknowledge the enormous contributions made by peer reviewers,” said Andrew Preston, CEO, Publons. “The aim of this partnership is not only to benefit ASM peer reviewers and authors by improving the speed and quality of the peer review process, but also to benefit the wider public by accelerating the rate of discovery in the science of infectious diseases and other microbiological research,” he added.

ASM journals have long been recognized as the most prominent publications in the field, providing coverage of both clinical and basic microbiology. With over 90 years of experience, these journals serve as an authoritative source in the field of microbial sciences.

“We're grateful for the extraordinary volunteer efforts made by the microbiology research community in reviewing manuscripts submitted to ASM Journals. Each year, our Editors in Chief publish editorials in their journals acknowledging the contributions made by Editorial Board members and ad hoc reviewers. We're pleased to participate in the Publons pilot since it expands the opportunities to give reviewers the credit they deserve for their contributions to the field,” said Dr. Barbara Goldman, Director of the ASM Journals program.

About Publons: Publons was founded in 2013 and is now based in London, UK, and Wellington, New Zealand. The company's mission is to speed up science by making peer review faster, more efficient, and more effective. 38,000 peer reviewers are getting credit for 110,000 reviews performed for 7,300 academic journals on the Publons platform. Publons also partners with Wiley, SAGE, PeerJ, eLife, and GigaScience.

About the American Society for Microbiology: The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to more than 39,000 members today, with more than one third located outside the United States. ASM journals are the most prominent publications in the field, delivering up-to-date and authoritative coverage of both basic and clinical microbiology. With over 90 years of experience, ASM journals continue to be the leading source for the latest in microbiology research.
